Desktop folder shortcuts quit, can't double-click & launch media files

New poster here. I've seen some related things and can't fix this one myself so I am asking for some help. I run AdAware and Spybot S&D daily in addition to using Sygate PF.

My problem: No folder shortcuts on my desktop will open when I double-click them. I can't even right-click them and use "explore", it doesn't work either. The only way I've been able to open Windows Explorer is to right-click the Start button, scroll to Programs, and select "Explore All Users". When I double-click a folder shortcut on my desktop, I get the hourglass for a second, then nothing. No media files will play when I double-click them. When I double-click a mp3 or mpg, avi, asf, etc. nothing. Needless to say, this is as annoying as it gets, any help out there?

Thanks, SS

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

Reboot your computer and post a new log.

Well the log is now clean... Try this:

Download the following file:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip

Extract it somewhere and double-click on the registry file contained within it. Then try a shortcut and tell me if it works.

Still no good. I don't know what has happened here, but I fear I am going to have to re-install WinXP, and I don't even know if that will do it.
