That could be a lot of things, really.
Does your mail host have a Fully qualified domain name? (FQDN) That's one thing that you're going to need, as mail will not be routed if you don't have that.
Give us more information about your situation, and we might be able to do something for you. I might even break out O'Reilly's Sendmail Reference, and see what I can remember.
