Back-up Antivirus

I currently use Avira Antivir Personal Edition Classic (which is the free version) as my main antivirus software. Can I install other AVs like BitDefender Free Edition 10 (which doesn't have real-time shield according to many reviews) as my back-up scanner? Or is this allowed in Windows XP Professional SP2? If so, aside from BitDefender, can you suggest other excellent program? Thanks..

Rather than install another AV as backup, I would suggest using one of these Online Scanners instead. This way, you can avoid worrying about potential conflicts with your resident AV and you can be sure the AV definitions are up to date:
ESET Online Scanner
Kaspersky Online Scanner
Panda Active Scan
Trend Micro HouseCall
F-Secure Online Virus Scanner
