Not really sure what the problem is. Do you have your XP installation disk? You can try this;
Go to Start | Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit the Ok button. Insert your CD if/when requested.
You will not see much happening whilst this is happening.
If that does not work you may have to do a system repair, unless someone can post a fix
.
