I am having difficulty understanding what user-defined simple data types, namespaces, and string type have to do with calculating taxes.

I am sure that my question may need more detail, but I want to avoid typing a novel. If anyone can help me to understand, I would appreciate it. If more detail is needed, then tell me what you need to know, and I will do my best to give you the information you need.
