Compaq Presario 2100 PXE-E61 Boot Error

Hello everyone I am new to the site with what it seems to be a common error with this model. I own a Compaq Presario 2100. Its been thru a 13 month deployment in Iraq recently. Needless to say I am encountering a Boot up error. My system will not complete its boot process. I keep getting an error message stating PXE-E61 and ends on a black screen with the message Operating System not found. Is this a hardware problem as in a bad hard drive, that I can fix by installing a new one or is it a software issue. Please help?

you can run a chkdsk -r through recovery console and/windows repair that will answer your Q to weather it is a hardware or software related problem
