Help about "work offline" box

  #1
Jul 24th, 2008
Hello,

Whenever I use my home computer, which is not connected to the internet, in the first five minutes, a box comes up with "no connection is detected. To view your stored web pages offline, click work offline." or something like that. And then it does it every hour after the first one. I have done the registry thing with this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WebCheck
And check that these two *String* keys are set to auto:
"LoadSens"="auto"
"LoadLCE"="auto"

I have done that, but it keeps happening. And also it say to delete "loadwc", done that too! I have a spybot program, and AVG 8.0, and nothing works!!! I really need help, because when im playing a game it reverts back to the desktop with that box and then i have to mess around all the time!!!

You say you are not connected to the internet. You don't make clear if this is by choice or not.

If it is by choice, and if your system is cut off from everything else - ie you're not borrowing dodgy disks, then you don't need AVG 8.0 or the spybot programs. In fact you should consider turning off all the programs that are used to manage internet use.

If you do want to be connected, you should focus on that first. Presumably you have an ISP. The first line of help would be to contact them to arrange a connection.

Russell,

I am not connected to the net by my choosing. I don't have any kind of internet connection (if that includes ISP), i just use it to play games. P.s Please don't reply if you don't have anything constructive, i said " i am not connected to the internet in my post." Pretty self-explanitory.

Just briefly, Blain

I wondered why you had AVG 8.0 and anti-spyware products if you had no net connection.

The logical thing then would be to close, disable or uninstall such programs which weren't going to give you benefit.

Certainly, from a similar experience to yours, I've found running a ~safe~ game in a closed environment to be trouble free, with programs like AVG, ZA, AdAware and Spybot not needed.

I hope some other forum members will weigh in with their expertise. I wish you luck.

Russ,
I use AVG to remove viruses from downloaded stuff,(from other computers) and i dont really use that spybot that much. To tell you the truth, I use games and stuff i didnt really pay for..... (don't go after me, go after the sites that let you download it). I have tried everything!!!! Nothing works, and it's getting on my nerves. I have so much stuff on there, it could be anything. P.S If i use my XP disc to reinstall it, will it let me keep all my stuff on my computer?

Using AVG makes sense for the purpose you mention, of course.

I may be able to help here....

My problem, which hasn't been resolved yet, is that I have no room on my C drive, but I have a large (120 Gb) HDD with other partitions. If I need to, I can move masses of programs from C drive onto another partition but my system files are clogging the C drive up.

How big is your hard disk?
Do you have partitions? If the answer is no, then you could consider getting Partition Magic or some cheaper alternative and partition your disk drive.

Then, you can transfer games and programs off your master drive and put them in the other partition(s). The point about this is that when \ if you reformat your C drive you will leave all the other stuff on the other partitions safe, but C drive (all the files you've left on) will be wiped and then revamped.

So the answer to your question, will it let you keep your stuff, is No, not unless you move it to a partition. But I've had an afterthought. Buy a USB storage drive (2Gb, 4Gb, cost about $20) and put the games on there. That way it's even safer.

If you find this relevant, and if I haven't made it clear, post again and I'll try and clarify.

The problem is that those antivirus programs need to use the Internet to update their virus lists.

As long as socialists intent on destroying free enterprise, foreign nations intent on spying, and teenagers with nothing better to do, can create malware, the virus definitions on your computer must be updated daily. A virus scanner with year-old definitions won't find the latest nasties.
