First please tell us which OS are you using?
Are you trying to copy the data to another partition on the same Hard Drive or to another Hard Drive?
If you are trying to copy the data from one partition to another in the same Hard Drive than make sure that another partition is properly formatted.
Just go to My Computer and right click on the (destination)partition where you want to paste the copied data and click on format.
properly format that partition or the Hard Drive where you want to copy the data and then try doing it.

1st of all upgrading OS has nothing to do with the problem of data copying.
There could be a problem with the partition or the Hard Drive where you want to copy the data?
1st tell us which OS are you using ?
Just boot your computer normally as you do and then go to command prompt and use the command "Chkdsk /r"
Use this command and then let us know what result you get from this.
