Have gone through your logs.
In addition to too many processes running, and too many autostarting programs (which I will get to in a moment) you really don't have enough RAM installed on the computer. According to the Deckard Scanner you have 256MB of RAM on the computer, this is obviously not enough. Their recommendation shown is to increase to 512 MB, I would certainly agree to at least this increase, but my recommendation would be to go to at least 1GB of RAM. RAM is not expensive, easy to install yourself in a matter of moments and will greatly increase the speed of the computer. I suggest that you go to Crucial and do their free online scan for RAM recommendations. It takes only a moment and then they will give you the recommended amounts for your system and exactly what to purchase. I have purchased through them several times and have always been very satisfied with their prices and, depending on where you live, their delivery time. There prices are generally one of the best you can get and you can receive instructions from them on the install. It will definitely speed the system and as I said the cost is not high.

Now Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan removed 1 infected file and 5 infected registry keys.
Don't see an ESET Scanner log.
You have a HUGE number of unnecessary programs running at Start up and therefore running all the time in the background and naturally consuming very valuable system resources.
Either disable these via the actual program itself, if possible or use either CodeStuff Starter or Mike Lin's StartUp Control Panel to disable the auto starting. Both are good programs, both are FREE and small and don't run in the background. Mike Lin's deals really with program autostarts, while CodeStuffStarter gives both programs, services and also has a version of the taskmanager which shows what is running on the computer at any given time. Both of these are an excellent way of controlling auto starts as opposed to msconfig which should really only be used as a troubleshooting tool.
Here is a list of programs I see in your logs which don't need to be running as auto starts and can be run manually anytime they are needed;

These programs are not required to start automatically as you can run them when you need to. It is advised that you disable these programs so that they do not take up necessary resources.
MMTray...MusicMatch Jukebox icon in the task tray
mmtask...Part of MusicMatch Jukebox
Microsoft Works Update Detection name explains it, do it manually.
NvCplDaemon...Intializes the clock and memory settings on nVidia based graphics cards. Enable if you overclock your card. If you do not overclock then disable
nwiz...Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system
NvMediaCenter...System Tray icon used to manage settings for nVidia based graphics cards. May be required for some 3D applications to recognize your card correctly. Users Choice.
SunJavaUpdateSched...SunJava updater. Do this manually. Much of the time it doesn't work.
TkBellExe...Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player. Not required
QuickTime Task...System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards
iTunesHelper...Installed with Apple's iTunes for Windows. Uses ~3-4MB of memory and if disabled in MSCONFIG or deleted from the registry it will re-instate itself after running iTunes a few times. So you have to be sure it is still disabled after using iTunes
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher...supposedly speeds the opening of Adobe Reader, increased speed is neligible. Open it manually.
MSMSGS... Windows Messenger utility, NOT an instant messaging program. If you don't use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"
MoneyAgent...Part of MS Money. Available via Start -> Programs
ctfmon.exe...CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features.
swg..Added by the Google ToolBar for Internet Explorer. This program will notify you when you attempt to change the Internet Explorer search engine to something other than Google and asks if you would like to allow the change. This program, when run, will also connect to Google's servers and check for new updates to to the Google Notifier. Disable the setting in the Toolbar settings and then removing the autorun entry. If you do not enable/disable that setting again the autorun entry will not come back.
Picasa Media Detector...Media detector for Picasa's automatic photo organizer
Google Updater...Installed with various Google applications to download and alert you when there is a new update available
Microsoft Find Fast...Complete utter waste of space! Part of MS Office - searches disk drives for Office file types and creates an index to make opening them easier.
Office Startup...Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required. Note - if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.

There are also several programs I recommend that you uninstall;
You can remove ALL old versions of Java via Add/Remove. You only need to keep the present version which you do have. Most current is version 6 update 7.
Uninstall AdAwareSE. It is out of date. Don't bother with the newer version, it now installs itself as a service and runs all the time in the background. This of course is my own opinion but don't feel it is nearly as good as the previous versions.
I would recommend that you update your Spybot program, current version is 1.6 and you only have version 1.3. It still is very highly regarded and removes a LOT of nasty items. Be sure when you get rid of the old version and install the new one that you do NOT enable TeaTimer portion of the program. It runs all the time in the background and can interfere with the removal of any "bad" items.
Also please get the newest version of SpywareBlaster, which is version 4.1. You have only version 4.0. This really is a MUST have program and be sure to keep it updated.
Hope this answers your questions satisfactorily. Anything else be sure to ask.
Judy

Judy, thank you very much for all your advice. You took a lot of time, and it will take me time to do all that you suggest, but I will. I'm sure it will make a big difference.

Thanks again,

Diana

Be sure to come back here, to this thread, and let me know how things are going.
Judy

Hello Judy,

Here's an update on my issues:
Crucial says I have maximum memory installed on my machine. It's almost 5 years old, but I'd prefer not to buy a new one just yet, as I am buying two laptops for college-age sons.

I uninstalled Adaware, updated Spywareblaster and Spybot. Also reran the other scanners advised. They did find some stuff, which I fixed (I hope).

I downloaded both CodestuffStarter and StartUpMonitor and tried to disable the programs as you advised. Yet after startup, I still see many of them in the TaskManager, and I don't know why. Which log would you need me to post to examine that?

Also, FYI, I like Picasa, and if the Picasa Media Detector is what automatically transfers all images on the computer to Picasa, I'd like to keep that running.

Thanks again,
Diana

As far as scans go, how about doing the Deckard’s System Scanner that you can get from HERE, just scroll down and you will see the instructions for it and links for download. BEFORE you do that also do the Malwarebytes program that you will also find there, follow the instructions for both programs EXACTLY and post both logs here.

FYI, I like Picasa, and if the Picasa Media Detector is what automatically transfers all images on the computer to Picasa, I'd like to keep that running.

I too use Picasa, I do NOT keep it running all the time in the background, I open it when needed. It is your choice of course but it doesn't have to run all the time to run properly.
How are you connected to the internet, I didn't ask. Also, has it ALWAYS been slow? If not, when did it begin?
Too bad about the RAM but if Crucial says you have maximum then...Can you give me the make, and model of this computer?

-- End of Deckard's System Scanner: finished at 2008-08-12 22:08:31 ------------

I have a Dell Dimension 8250, and connect to the Internet by hi-speed cable. According to TaskManager, I'm now running 45 processes instead of 55 or so. I noticed the Internet (and everything else) was slower in recent months. But I think disabling some of these processes has already helped.

Maybe I'm not using CodeStuffStarter properly, because I can't seem to get some of the programs you mentioned out of TaskManager.

Thanks,
Diana

Tell you what, download Combofix to the desktop.
When you have the Save as screen configured to save ComboFix.exe to the Desktop, click on the Save button. ComboFix will now start downloading to your computer. If you are on a dialup, this may take a few minutes. When ComboFix has finished downloading you will now see an icon on the desktop. Once that appears then do the following

Close all open Windows including this one.

Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.

Double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. You will be asked if you are sure you want to run the program. Click the RUN button. Follow any prompts given and be sure to agree to the disclaimer. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete.
Be aware that ComboFix will disconnect your computer from the Internet. Therefore, do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet as your connection will be completely restored at a later stage in the program.
ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.

While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to what they were previously. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan.
When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
When all is complete post back here with the combofix log.

Hi Judy,

I've been a bit busy, plan to do Combofix either Friday or Saturday night. Didn't want you to think I was out of commission!

Cheers,
Diana

That's fine. I will be out of town and away from the computer beginning Friday afternoon but others will keep and eye on this and continue with you.
Judy

Here is the combofix log, as requested. unnerving process for me, but computer survived. thanks for your help in deciphering.

Diana

Hi Diana,

Judy is away being a grandparent for a while ;)

-- Your last combofix log looks ok to me. Are you still having any problems?

-- You should Uninstall Viewpoint via Add/Remove Programs. It is "foistware" and not needed.

-- Also, you can delete C:\Documents and Settings\diana\Application Data\LimeWire if it remains.

Cheers :)
PP

I uninstalled Viewpoint and don't see Limewire. Computer is definitely faster. Thank you to all who helped!

Diana

Thank you to all who helped!

I'll jump in and speak for Judy and say You're Welcome! I'm sure it was her pleasure :)
