Hi all i just got a hp dv 6000 with visa home premium. After a few days i keep getting a message saying windows aero is not working and that my copy of windows is not genuine, the message has a link to microsoft website which validates my copy of windows but the message keeps appearing every time i startup and i cannot access my control panel it appears to be opening and then nothing . please help

Please download the latest copy of HijackThis from Trend Micro and save it to your desktop.

• Double click on HJTInstall.exe to install it. Click on Install. By default, it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
• Read through the License Agreement presented to you on the next screen and click on I Accept.
• Once installed, HijackThis will start automatically. If it doesn't, please go to your desktop and double click on the HijackThis shortcut created there.
• Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
• Close HijackThis.

Please post the contents of the post here for the experts to review and help you with the removal.
Note: Do not click on the AnalyzeThis button.

Hi, before I start working on this, I'd like to tell you that I find no infection on this log.
The infected/malware files may be hiding in your computer.
I would also like to ask you something.
Have you purchased this laptop from a retail outlet?
Or did you buy it off a friend? It may be that it's installed with a pirated copy of Windows Vista which is causing the Windows Genuine Advantage Toolkit to be installed on your computer.
Windows Genuine Advantage has been known to have been exploited by malware to install itself as a service on the computer, this is why I asked for a HijackThis log.

If you are certain that the copy of Windows is valid, then please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

• DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
• Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily.
• The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Thanks for the advise, first off I live in the carribean and i gave a friend of mine to purchase it for me, a few weeks ago he came to the carribean on vacation and brought it for me he also brought and external hdd and a pair of extra head set which he paid for and a laptop bagpack however i didn't get a vista cd, i did get the manual sealed in plastic and it has windows vista home premium oem with the product key sticker on the bottom however the hp sticker says refufbished. I can't say where he bought it in the u.s. though

Hi, I cannot attribute your problem to malware issues as your log appears to be clean. However, I may be wrong here.
This seems to be the original Windows Genuine Advantage toolkit installed by Microsoft as a measure to check piracy.

I'm still not clear if this is a new laptop or a used one.
Since your friend bought it for you, ask him where he bought it from and then ask if he has installed Vista or if it was pre-loaded.
If it was pre-loaded, then there's a good chance that you are a victim of pirated software which was installed by the retailer/seller themselves.

Thank alot for your advise, I can't reach my friend to find out where he bought it but it's new I guess, what confuses me is if I have counterfeit windows why does microsoft keep validating my copy evertime? Also would restoring it to the original factory setting help if that can be done at this stage.

BTW vista came pre-loaded i cant remember if i had to enter the product key which is at the bottom of the system though, but it hadn't been used before.
