Hi gbear, you have some things to fix there, but right now you're running HJT from a temp folder. In order for it to safely save backups, it should be in a permanent folder. Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

HJT also needs to have all browser windows closed in order for it to make fixes properly. So, after you've moved HJT to a safe folder, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

After HJT has completed its fixes, do the following:

- Reboot into safe mode

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- Delete the entire C:\Program Files\WildTangent folder.

- Delete the C:\WINDOWS\System32\fgjep.dll file.

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed.)

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

- Post a new HJT log.

working thru this here is what I want. I cannot open my email.. I have done the steps outlined previously (or at least I hope I have done them all). Here is my latest hijackthis log. but when I rebooted my computer (after rebooting in safe mode and following directions); it still came up with the "about:blank" page...this is so frustrating... Hang in there- it's dinner time in my end of the world, so I do really need to log off now. However, some of our other security responders (crunchie, dlh6213, caperjack) live in different time zones, and should therefore be able to pick up on this before I get back online tomorrow AM.

good news, I think things are all better. I'd feel better though if one of you super guru types can tell me if my hijackthis log is clean now.. also, can someone tell me how to set up some parental controls or locks or passwords or something so my son (who shall be untrustworthy for a while in my books) will have no choice in the future. Temptation will not be a problem for him if he is prevented from going to sights he shouldn't be going to. Thanks again, Gbear

The emails you're talking about are probably the ones that are generated automatically when someone responds to a thread you are subscribed to. Can you get to your email now?

I don't know what happened, but you are now using an older versions of HJT (1.97.7), but you were using the latest version before (1.98.2). You should scan again with the newer version and post another log.

As for your son, there is no reliable way to keep him out of trouble without standing there looking over his shoulder. The best thing to do is to have a talk with him (like you haven't done that already, right?)

To help protect your system, you should keep it updated with Window Updates and use a utility like SpywareBlaster (it's free!).
