hiya, help i have a virus! for the last few morning i have had the pop up from spybots saying kenny exe wants to access your computer, and i denied access till this morning because my friend said it could be a windows update, so i allowed kenny18 stupidly, then though id better check it out and found that a few other people have the same thing which is from a virus from a link in a message which i opened the other week that was sent through my friends facebook account (with out her knowing) to view a video. when i clicked the link in the message it took me to, i think it was geocites.com and on the page was a video player, so i clicked play and it said i need to up date flash player, so i clicked on it, and it downloaded some random exe to my desktop, then though something not right, so i installed spybots and did a check and a few malware thing and cookies came up, so i corrected them, and all was well, till now! this morning when i allowed the exe i remembered the location it went to which was C/WiNDOWS, so i had a look in the folder and it was in there along with kenny 15,16 and 17 i ran spybots but nothing really came up. i have searched the net but so many mixed reports on how to get ride of it have came up, iam a bit confused! Can anyone help me who may have had this or just knows away to get rid of it compleaty? thank you so much! jazz

Hi jazz83, welcome to daniweb.
You will need to do the following:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Under Main choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

* Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Reboot the computer.

Then download HiJackThis
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to install it. Click on Install. By default, it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
Read through the License Agreement presented to you on the next screen and click on I Accept.
Once installed, HijackThis will start automatically. If it doesn't, please go to your desktop and double click on the HijackThis shortcut created there.
Click on Do a system scan and save a logfile.
Close HijackThis.
Next open the program again and click Open Misc Tools section and then click on, Open Uninstall manager.
Click on Save list... and copy paste the log here.
Finally, post back here with all those requested logs.
Judy

Eric, you need to put all this in your own thread. Problems may be the same but the computers are not. What works on one may not on another. Having two different people posting questions in the same thread leads to nothing but confusion for everyone.
Make your own thread, include all your information, including a HiJackThis log, along with the two you have included here and I will get to your thread ASAP.
Judy

....Avg say that they have all been moved in to the virus vault, should i still carry on and do all of the tests you have suggested to me too? regards jazz

iam trying what you suggested too

Did you tell the AVG program to clean or quarantine the items found? If you did not please do so. Then please continue with the steps given and report back with those logs too. Be sure you have the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Remove everything it finds and also be sure to REBOOT the computer after taking running the Malwarebytes' program.
You said your Dad told you to install AVG which is good, but didn't you have an anti-virus program on the computer before this?
Judy

well they are in the virus vault, so i presume they are quarantined, my father said dont clean it untill you know what they are becauese it might do harm to my computer by deleting them, is this correct? i have spybots on the computer, as i see now it doesnt cover everything, because it didnt pick up on any of the kenny worms etc, i was wrongly informed about skybots i think. anyhow i will up-date you when i have finished all the tests!

Your Dad is absolutely right about quarantine. Anti-virus programs occasionally will give what are called false positives and flag something that is not an infection but a legitimate file just because it may have the earmarks similar to something known to be an infection. After all, if an antivirus program had every known good file and bad file in it's data the programs would just be too big to even run. With the infections in the virus vault you are fine, they cannot hurt the computer. Leave them there until we finish all these steps and then we will know for sure they are bad and you can empty them out. Leave them there for now.
Now for Spybot Search & Destroy. It is an EXCELLENT program, but no it probably didn't find the kenny worms, that is not what it is designed to do. This is why you should ALWAYS have more than one security type program on a computer...ONE antivirus program like AVG or one of the other highly respected programs, ONE firewall, there are several good free ones out there, TWO at least of anti-malware programs...Spybot is one of the best as is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, adware, hijackers and other malicious software. Not viruses.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well-known Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware cannot do. It is excellent at removing many of these trojans and other items found today.
These are pretty much the programs we begin with right now. There are others we suggest at times but these right now are the ones we have people begin with, I do anyway.
You may wonder why use more than one program? Because if one nasty item is found, chances are there could be others and you want to be absolutely certain that everything bad is removed.
Continue with the steps finishing with the HiJackThis log and post all the logs here and then we will know for certain if other steps are needed or the computer is clean.
There is ONE more program you will need AFTER the computer is clean to help protect the computer that is FREE, great protection program and doesn't run in the background but we will get to that after I see all the logs.
Judy

ok here we go, this is the results from all the scans...

Hi Eric,
Looks like MBA-M removed some of your nasty items. One however was not removed;kenny18.exe.
One thing you MUST do is disable the Spybot TeaTimer and don't let it run. It CAN interfere with fixes, especially those we might try with HJT.
To disable TeaTimer you need to open Spybot.
Up at the top you will see Mode. Click that and choose Advanced.
When you do that you will see three buttons or listings at the bottom left, one of those is Tools.
Click that. When you do on the left side will be a row of buttons. Second one down is Resident.
Click that. Then when that opens TAKE THE CHECK MARK OUT of TeaTimer.
Close the program and Reboot the computer.
Try one more run of your AVG and then another of MBA-M (updating both first) and see if either will pick up kenny18.exe and remove it.
Reboot the computer.
Run another HJT scan and save the log
Post back here with those three new logs. If our "friend" kenny18 remains we will try another step.
Judy

hi judy is this message for me - jazz or eric?

Sorry, this message was for jazz.
See what I mean about confusion if two post problems in the same thread?

I "think" it got it. Sure looks like it anyway. This is what I was hoping for anyway.
You need to set a new and clean System Restore point.
To do this Right Click My Computer. Choose Properties. When System Properties opens click on the System Restore tab. When that opens place a check mark in Turn Off System Restore. Click Ok. You will probably get a box telling you this will turn off System Restore and are you certain you want to do this, click yes or ok. System Restore will then shut down. Wait a moment and go back in and take the check mark out. This will turn it back on.
I also would recommend that you add the FREE program SpywareBlaster by Javacoolsoftware Really a MUST have program, highly recommended on most anti-malware sites today. To quote from their website;

* Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
* Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
* Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

Try it for a couple weeks, enable everything in the program. Scan with Spybot & Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and chances are they will find NOTHING! Really adds an extra layer of protection to the computer.
Judy

hi judy, thank you very, very much for all your help and advice you have given me, fingered crossed it has gone, but will run the programs dailey and the new one you suggested and just keep a look out over the next few days for anything odd again. sorry just a few quick questions, should i turn the tea time thing back on in spybots again? in avg all the stuff in virus vault get deleted after 30 days, should that be safe? thanks very much again for your help, regards jazz

Leave TeaTimer off. Personally I think it is more trouble than it is worth and with SpywareBlaster on there things won't be able to get on the computer in the first place really.
As for as the stuff in the AVG vault you probably can go ahead and get rid of it now. We know for sure that these were the viruses and not key files. Leaving them there is fine too if you wish, they aren't hurting anything because they are locked up and can't re-infect the computer.
Just be sure to keep all your security programs updated often.
Judy

Hi Judy, well i have done checks over the last few days and every thing seems alright, not even any cookies have came up today. I emptied the virus vault and all seems to be fine there too, tho my computer is running very slow, it that because of all the anti-virus programs? and that its very old, low ram, small hardrive etc, pc? Anyhow thanks again for all your help and advice, regards jazz

How large is your hard drive and how full is it? How much RAM do you have installed?
Give me two things, another HiJackThis scan and also generate a Start Up log with HiJackThis and post both here, I can take a look and see if there are things we can pare down from that and hopefully speed things up a bit.
Judy

Hiya, the harddrive is 37gig, it had 10gig free at the mo. The ram is i think 528.

Heres the logs......

Ok, your drive is basically 2/3 full. If you have a lot of music, pictures, videos that you want to keep then I would burn them to a CD or something like that. Once you have burned them to a disk, then delete them from the computer. That will regain you some space.
Then I noticed that Malwarebytes' was running in the background. It isn't supposed to do that so be sure to turn it off. When you want to do a scan, keep other things running to a minimum, speeds up the process for sure.
Next I would recommend downloading a FREE program called CodeStuff Starter to help control your auto starts.
Very easy to use. You can control programs starting from the start up file and also unnecessary services starting when windows starts up.
Download and then install it. Open the program and you will see Three Tabs.
Start Ups, Processes, Services. Start ups are the programs which load at start up.
Click that Tab
When that opens take the Checkmarks OUT of the following;

ATIPTA
>>>Control panel for the ATI series of video cards allowing access to such features as display resolution, colour depth, etc. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display if you need to change something. Otherwise you don't need this running all the time.
NeroCheck>>>Associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Checks for driver issues. Really not required to run all the time. Can be run manually if needed.
RemoteControl>>>Remote Control background application for CyberLink's PowerDVD version 4 and above. Enables you to use a remote control with your DVD drive if your drive came with one. Not required if you don't have a remote control, or don't wish to use one. If you do use it all the time then leave it alone.
TkBellExe>>>Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player. Not required, in fact newer versions of RealOne Player don't even have this included.
SunJavaUpdateSched>>>Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Not required and doesn't work that well anyway. Check manually using Java Control Panel
QuickTime Task>>>System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards. Not required can be run manually when needed.
MSMSGS>>>This is NOT MSN Messenger or an IM program. It isWindows Messenger utility. If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying.
Adobe Gamma Loader>>>Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it. In my case I can verify this as Photoshop loads fine
WinZip Quick Pick>>>Added with WinZip version 8.1. "The new WinZip Quick Pick taskbar tray icon gives you instant access to WinZip and your Zip files. Just left click the icon to open WinZip, or right click it to instantly reopen recently used Zip files, access your Favorite Zip Folders, open WinZip Help, or start WinZip itself.". You can right-click and close it - choosing to not re-load it at start-up

Services;
To use this Double Click on the entry. Stop the service if it is running and change Start up to Disabled or at least Manual.
Ati HotKey Poller>>>ATI External Event Utility EXE Module. This task can comsume lots of CPU resournces on some computers
ATI Video Card Control Panel>>>not required unless you use it often.

After you have turned off or disabled the start ups and services then close the program and reboot the computer.
Remember, any of these items you have stopped you can always go back into the CodeStuff Program and re-enable them.
Judy

hi judy, sorry i havent got back to you sooner, very busy with work. i have tryed what you have suggested and it still seems to take a long time to start up, but when its on it seems to be working much faster, which is great! the reason malwarebytes whats running was becaues i had just done a scan one of my external harddrive, so dont worry thats not normally running! thank you for your help judy! :-) jazz

hi judy, i spoke too soon, my computers decided to turn its self off twice in the last hour, could this be down to something in the list i have turned off? or the virus, tho i have been scanning comp daily and nothing had come up? when it went off both only has fire fox up but on different pages and listening to music on mediaplayer the first time?

well i was just thinking and after i put spyware blaster on it has been running slow, do you think it could be conflicting with something or...? sorry all the questions!

Spywareblaster doesn't run in the background so there should be no conflict there at all.
Run a new HJT scan and post it and I will take another look. Part of the slowness still could be because the drive is so full, not sure.

Have you done a defrag lately? Remember lots of files were moved around during this clean up. Have you emptied your temp files lately? Use ATF-Cleaner to get rid of those.

Then try this free defrag program Auslogic Defrag it works quite well and is faster than the built in defrag.
Don't download anything else but that. Try it and see if that helps. It is also free.
