Hi,

Recently came across remote access , remote control and VPN solutions. I found hosted solutions very effective in particular.
They offer security and are so much easy to use. I found RemotePC (http://www.ibackup.com/remote_access/) and Gotomypc (http://www.gotomypc.com) very productive. Specially RemotePC since it is cost effective also and they have a free trial version, so you can test it and then buy it if it suits your need.

Hello,

We use VNC a lot here at work, and also in the home environment. I have VNC running on Grandma's machine over dialup, and once a month or so need to remote in from 200 miles away and fix it. She finds it amazing....

Anyways, VNC is not VPN-like out of the box, especially if you are running it with Mac or Windoze.

I have to caution you on working with these protocols on an employer's machine. I discovered GoToMyPC on a contractor's computer at work, and had to report it. He was terminated immediately. Do not do this sort of thing at work.

If you are running WindozeXP, or 2003 Server or 2000 server, you have the option of using the RDP client software to remote control them. Those sessions are encrypted.

If you are running linux to linux, you can setup VNC to be encapsulated by SSH to encrypt the sessions. Interestingly, VNC on a linux/unix box with different port numbers will give the users different environments on the same machine.

And also be aware that if you are behind firewalls, you may have to open ports to have this stuff work. BUt be VERY CAREFUL on what you decide to do with this... open ports are invitations for visitors.

Christian
