vb .net step by step by Michael Halvorson is a good book to get started. I just started learning vb.net

No......If you learn from a textbook it will take time and you'll forget things...

If you want to learn VB.NET ....Create your own application ...More like a student course schedule or online registration..Use the features one by one ...

Use database like SQL server to make your project interesting...

Use google to explore on each features ....Thats the best and fastest way to learn VB.NET....
