laptop screen appears to be malfunctioning

Hello, Iam new to this group, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about my issue below. I check the pysical connections already its a Dell, I hope to aviod replacing my LCD screen, hopfully their are some troubleshooting fixes before I have to do that. Thank you

laptop screen appears to be malfunctioning, i.e. computer on, screen is off
first thing to do is try hooking the laptop to a regular computers monitor ,you connect the monitor and use the FN [function]key along with the corresponding F key maybe F5 or f7 ,the one with the 2 little monitors on it ,if the laptop displays correctly on that monitor ,you have a lcd problem
