Looks to me like dll compare has listed every dll file on your PC. There's no way I can go through 1,417 entries and pick out a baddie.
Saying that, I really do not think you have an A:B problem.
Do as Caperjack suggests for now and get service pack 1 for XP and IE.

Anyway. I've updated every thing except SP2 (which some folk think is a bit suspect anyway) I've also done just about every cleanup and test recommendedand the dodgy search engine seems to have gone! The homepage still resets to about:blank after rebbot but with a blank page.
I'm taking this as a good sign, cranked up the security settings, installed scotty to patrol for any wierd happennings and I've given IE the sack in favour of Firefox.
I'm hoping that this will sort everything out so THANKS THANKS THANKS for all the hard work, patience and chilled vibes while you all sorted my life out!
I'm guessing that all of you do this for the craic (which baffles me more than the problems i've been having) so can you tell me how to send DaniWeb a Christmas present without using creditcard or internet? I'm feeling very dodgy about electronic money right now...
Thanks to DMR, Crunchie, Caperjack and all the behind the scenes folk who I just know are there. I think the wombat of happiness just rang my doorbell... Its good to know there's some froods out there who really know where their towels are...

The recommendations of being absolutely sure that your current install of XP is "squeaky-clean" before upgrading to SP2 are many and well founded. It's often suggested that you treat migrating to SP2 as the equivalent to instzalling an entirely new version of Windows.

OK, well... we certainly don't do it for the money; there is none- we're all volunteers. Is it just "for the craic", as you say, though? That's hard to answer- the word "craic" actually has no direct English translation, and even used in normal Irish conversation it can have deeper meanings (depending on context) than the literal definition of the word would indicate.
Personally, I don't think I could quite describe a stint here at DaniWeb as "great craic" per se (although we definitely do have a community of really great people here, it is still a lot of work), but I would definitely say that of a good seisiún at The Pough and Stars in San Francisco.

Please do not contact me by email or PM for help. We're all volunteers here, and only have so much free time to dedicate to our efforts.
However, if I've been working on a thread with you already, and seem to have "forgotten" your thread, please do send me a message. I try not to let things slip through the cracks, but it does happen sometimes.

Ay up! I'm back! Thanks for getting back... I PMed Dani as you sugested, nice one...
The only trouble I'm having now I've switched to Firefox is that WinPatrol pops up every 2 minutes telling me that my IE homepage has changed to About:Blank!!!!!!! The Bulls*** search engine is gone, no-one thinks I've got an about:blank problem so why is it doing this and how do I stop it? What if I leave it as A:B and just forget about it? I'll still have this nagging feeling that somewhere in the bowels of my puter there's a little thingy waiting to do something dodgy. Also, out of the blue when IE was closed, 53 blank windows suddenly popped up. What's all that about?
I know I'm looking like a basket case at this stage and apologies for taking up so much time but it would be good to put this to rest...

The upgrade to SP2 has caused problems with certain hardware/software configurations, and for those people who decided to apply SP2 when their current XP installation has virus/spyware infections or other more general Windows "glitches".

In safe mode the homepage does not reset to about:blank. Having said that there's no net connection.
CCleaner cleaned all addresses from the History includin this one which I never visited (as far as I know):
http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/ads? client=cu-pub-74780934
(there may have been more digits at the end but I couldn't get the window big enough. Anyway I went to the address (leaving off everything after pagead/) and i got the message "nothing to see here"... Bit scoobydoo, eh?
After completing all scan/removes in safe mode I went to check Internet Propertiesand the Home page was "http://hsremove.com/done.htm". After changing it to daniweb I rebooted and we're back to about:Blank again!!!
While in services.msc, I found NT LM Security Support Provider (NtLmSsp) was stopped. Has this got anything to do with it or am I getting paranoid as well as appoplectically desparate?
Excuse me while I go off and cry for a while
Go raibh maith agat agus slan go foile!
Hey dude,
Since you have been doing this for a while now... had you for any change been messing around with the advanced settings of spybot?... cux there is an option there that will lock the IE home page, if that is the case, is just a matter of changing it to whatever page you want or just disable it...
Krilugo.
Just passing by...
