evil mp3 codec

i'm having a similar problem as others w/ this kind of virus. i got this one under the guise of an mp3 sofware called codec mp3.
it has borrowed the microft sec. update icon (the red shield) on the lower right toolbar. tho the legit icon appears in tandem w/ it now. the malicious one's text bubble will say "you have a security problem." then periodic fake advertisements come up for spyware and such.
it prevented me from updating norton until i used safari (i am on XP) to download free updates from my college IT store. i ran a full scan overnight, finding no corruptions/infections.
this morning i went to norton and got its most recent update. some progress: the auto-protect results have IDd aobut 15 trojan horses and downloaders, reporting a new one about every 10 minutes. i downloaded the free ad-aware from lavasoft, and that is going real slow.
i did many of the scans offline and to verify that the popups were the result of my possessed computer. i've avoided using paswords and so on, and for now am using my laptop. i am the kind of chump who thought real hard about paying for pctools (whose scan IDd 700+ baddies, on my trip to majorgeeks) but i am not the least bit inclined to type sensitive info, desperation aside. this virus is crippling me. please help.

The best program to use is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware... try that and see if you helps fix your problem....

OK, well there seems to be a few things wrong there, that we can clear up.
Pls download & run ccleaner.... this will clear out some temporary files, and is a trojan in the your temp folder...
so this will clear things out.....
Pls do that, and then download hijackthis and post the log

As the thread contains no resolution to the problem originally posed, and the problem was neither novel nor complex, the refusal to remove the thread at the poster's request amounts to the following being true:
It is daniweb's policy to aid and abet identity theft, because no other discernible purpose explains your failure to delete the thread.
Given that daniweb has the option to remedy its flagrant abuse of its users' good faith, and its New York state situs, daniweb is under an obligation to exercise reasonable means of protection of its users' privacy.
It should be obvious to anyone that deleting this thread is clearly within the bounds of reasonable measures that are available to daniweb in keeping with privacy protection.
The fact that the onus is on the user not to post sensitive information is beside the point. It doesn't matter if the users' privacy is placed at risk voluntarily by the user or not. The point is that daniweb is under an obligation to take reasonable measures to protect users' privacy. In this case, deleting the thread would fulfill that obligation.
If the answer is a dismissive "that cannot be done," I will be taking my concerns to a different forum where daniweb's policy of aiding and abetting identity theft can be spotlighted.

It should be obvious to anyone that deleting this thread is clearly within the bounds of reasonable measures that are available to daniweb in keeping with privacy protection.
The fact that the onus is on the user not to post sensitive information is beside the point. It doesn't matter if the users' privacy is placed at risk voluntarily by the user or not. The point is that daniweb is under an obligation to take reasonable measures to protect users' privacy. In this case, deleting the thread would fulfill that obligation.
If the answer is a dismissive "that cannot be done," I will be taking my concerns to a different forum where daniweb's policy of aiding and abetting identity theft can be spotlighted.

This is just another case of a person not taking responsibilty for their own actions as far as I am concerned.
I suppose if I stepped off the footpath and a car hit me, it would be the cars fault?
I doubt that anyone could use your name to steal your identity. I am sure that there are hundreds of people with that name.
Maybe if your address, date of birth, place of birth, parents names/maiden names etc. were present also.......
You get the picture.
Anyway, if you have a problem, take it up with the admin of the site and you may be able to work something out.

As far as I'm concerned, this is just another case of a stubborn guru being unreasonable.
The likelihood of successfully stealing an identity is not the point. It's daniweb's obligation to take basic steps to protect the identity which is the point. Any failure to grasp that simply deleting the thread will fulfill that obligation is patently unreasonable.
