Help Strange IE problems

  #1
Dec 27th, 2004
I am sure there are plenty of posts about some of the same things but I am continually getting the cannot find server error in IE, after I refresh a few times it usually comes up but what a hassle. Also I cannot seem to get my norton antivirus live update to update the files it needs. I have went to their website and cannot even manually download them due to the IE errors above.

I have run Ad aware and HiJack this. Here is the log file from Hi Jack this:

Reboot into Safe Mode (you can get to the Safe Mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options, Tools, View, select "show hidden files and folders," and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."

For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Delete the entire contents of your
C:\Windows\Temp folder
C:\Temp folder

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll automatically be regenerated by Windows if they're needed.

Empty your Recycle Bin, and then reboot normally.

Download Killbox from here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
and put it on your desktop. Open Killbox and select the option Delete on Reboot.

One at a time, copy & paste the full path of these files into Killbox's topmost box.
C:\Program Files\Admilli Service\AdmilliKeep.exe
C:\Program Files\Admilli Service\AdmilliServ.exe

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, click the Red X, for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes; A second message will ask to Reboot now? Click No after the first entry (since you are not finished yet), and after the last one, click Yes and let the system reboot.

Whenever you scan with HJT, be sure all browser windows are closed. Now, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and have it fix the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Admilli Service] C:\Program Files\Admilli Service\AdmilliServ.exe
(May no longer be in the log)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [salm] c:\temp\salm.exe
(May no longer be in the log, more info here: http://www.liutilities.com/products/...slibrary/salm/)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hmrcxuz] C:\WINDOWS\hmrcxuz.exe
(Have HJT fix this unless you know what it's for)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tsa2] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\tsm2.exe
(More info here: http://www.liutilities.com/products/...slibrary/tsm2/)
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/C.../bridge-c17.cab
(Blazefind Windupdates Adware)
O16 - DPF: {205FF73B-CA67-11D5-99DD-444553540006} (CInstall Class) - http://www.errorguard.com/installation/Install.cab
O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe
(BargainBuddy)

Reboot into Safe Mode again
Go to
C:\Program Files and delete the Admilli Service folder, if found
c:\temp and delete salm.exe, if found
You need to delete this one, but you'll have to do a search for it -- tsm2.exe
Same with this one -- ts2.exe
(More info here: http://www.liutilities.com/products/...sslibrary/ts2/, both of those files are in the same folder, tsa, and you may want to delete the entire folder)

Reboot normally, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

You may wish to set seticon to start manually instead of automatically as it is known to be a resource hog (http://startup.iamnotageek.com/srch-SetIcon.exe.html)

Thanks for the info. I have followed your insturctions except for setting set seticon to manual. How do you do that? Here is my HJK log please examine it again and let me know if there are other things I might not need. What is WTServ?

Ok after following the directions and cleaning up my pc (so far) my IE6 still get the same page cannot be displayed error. Again after refreshing a few times it will finally show up. It's like it doesn't wait long enough for the page to load.

Any help?

Thanks

To change your seticon to start manually, click on Start, point to Settings, click on Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, and double-click on Services. Find seticon in the Name list on the left side (you may wish to maximize the window to make it easier), right-click on it, click on Properties, find Startup Type and click on the dropdown arrow on the far right, select Manual. Click OK at the bottom, and close the services window. Caution: keep track of any changes you make in Services so you can undo them if problems arise.

Apparently WTSrv is a driver for a Genius WizardPen.

And is probably related to WService.EXE

I don't see anything else in your log -- and I'm not sure why you're having that error. Maybe someone else will have some suggestions.

Ok I tried what you suggested but when I do that seticon doesn't appear in the services list. But when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del it is there? How can I turn it to manual?

Thanks

Sorry for the slow response. If seticon is showing up in your Services, you can't set it to start manually (not that I know of anyway), your only option would be to disable it in MSCONFIG. To do that, click on Start, Run, type in msconfig, and click OK. Click on the Startup tab, find seticon in the list on the left side, and remove the checkmark from the box. Click on Apply, and then OK. You will probably ask if you wish to Reboot now and you should let it. When it starts back up, you may get a message telling you something about starting is Selective Startup; you can either leave this unchecked as a reminder that you have something disabled (you will get the message each time you start your computer), or you can check the box so the message no longer comes up.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

Reboot and see if you still have the same problem.
