a personal idea that i will eventually use myself but ill share
start a little book club every month you assign a book for reading and sources where to get it. Then about a month later you start a thread for discussion of the book and possibly answer any questions the members may have had during the reading or after finishing. this is a great way to knit the community closer together and you guys all do what you love, read

I know where you are coming from.. I am going through the same thing with my forum. From talking to friends online, and just looking around, I have noticed that making a forum grow takes a lot of time. Way more than what I had initially thought it would take.
Exchanging links is a good way to start, and you said you have done that already, another is exchanging posts with similar forums that are also starting out or are fairly small. I will be doing that for my own forum.
Also, instead of using Smartor, you might want to just use phpBB by itself. There are plenty of free styles available out there that look good, and my work out for you.

Another good thing to add is opinion pieces.
I added an opinion piece to my website and submitted it to my favorite news site and then 4 other major news sites picked it up within a day. I had over 100k hits on the front page alone within 5 days.
People LOVE to debate things...editorials/opinion pieces, especially controversial ones like the one I posted, do well to stimulate conversation. Make sure that people are aware that it is an opinion piece and be careful to not be too crass or over destructive because you can lose members just as fast as you gain them if they don't like someone with 'that opinion' running a site they visit.

Have you thought about creating dummy accounts and start discussions between them?

I have the same problem with my forums and I don't think my site is that unaesthetically pleasing. I'm lost for ideas.

As for the contest idea, try these for prizes:
- Gmail invites (I can even invite you to Gmail so you can get invites to send out)
- A free link to the winner's website(if they have one) on your site
- set up some sort of currency system on your site(like the CCpoints on my site, http://www.createforum.com/phpbb/ind...orum=compuchat) and give some to the winner(s)

The popularity of Gmail has gone down a lot.. it seems like everyone out there has a Gmail account nowadays. That's one reason why you don't see it on eBay anymore.

that's actually some very good advice & an astute observation - both of which i will consider when putting up my www later this year.

Thanks a lot for everybody's feedback.
Two things:
1. I have already created a few controversial topics. But I think that as admin, that I must not go too far and encourage flame wars. Then I would be a troll on my own site!
2. I have already had a gmail invite contest. But unfortunately gmails are rather too saturated in the market right now to work.
My third idea is this. I am going to give away free banner advertising for anybody who contributes 10 reviews to my site. The banner will stay for a month. I shall make guidelines for reviews so that anybody who posts a one-liner review will not be eligible for the prize.
For three reviews or more, I shall give a button link to the site for the same period.
What do you all think?
