If you need to pay people (even with things like contests) to your site you're attracting the wrong kind of people...
Maybe there's just no interest in a site like you're building, maybe people can't find it that do have interest.
Word of mouth is the best way to get people who are passionate about your ideas.

I would just say that maybe asking people to review books at regular intervals is a bit difficult to catch on. I think a contest of some sort would definitely be in order.
As I said to everybody out there: mine is not a typical forum and not a very catchy one at first sight. I am not bothered about the aesthetic design. I am more concerned with quality content. I don't think my site is that badly designed anyway. The colours are cool and the style is basic phpBB subSilver with colours changed. I realise that building up content is the best way to market your site and I am setting an example by contributing my reviews at regular intervals of time.
I am also getting a lot of traffic from searches these days. Analysis shows that my site comes right on page 1 of google and MSN search for many relevant keywords.
Maybe the incentive to register is just not enough and maybe the idea of reviewing books just doesn't appeal to many people: too much like work, eh?
As I said before, I am attracting a lot of traffic. The difficulty is that enough people are not signing up.
P.S. I am a lot more relaxed now and I don't care too much about the fact that the site hasn't become popular. I guess that I never created this site for popularity but for serious discussions in literature and books. I will cling to that viewpoint and I shall continue to contribute content to my site whether others do so or not.

Well there are many domains that allows u to register and start a discussion board just free of cost. i personally own a forum be registering in forum.onecenter.com .......having creted a new foeum now the main problem arises is to make it famous ..... ur forum can be interresting if u give a mouth publicity of ur url and initially start some interesting topics by urself.....
harishankar;
I looked at your site today and I see after all the posts you have received, that not much has been changed.
I have to be up-front and truthfull so don't take this personal. I'm saying these things not to hamper you or offend, but to slap you into attention.
I don't feel sorry for you, I feel sorry for me and for any other visitor that would visit that mess. Visually, its a joke. Its' nothing I would ever join and I'm book lover. You have no headlines for anything. Quite honestly I could fart with more clarity because your site isn't clear. I cant tell if your comming or going theres no clear direction or objective. If you asked me to summarize your sites meaning, I'd respond with ?????????????????????????????????????????
All that said.
I can see that marketing that site would be easy. In fact if it were my project I'd have a 1000 new members in the first 6 weeks.
So rather than try to give you a lesson in marketing pay attention to this test that our group conducted in California USA. (no detail added for security reasons)
=====================CASE EXAMPLE=======================
The Situation:
In the United States a man was convicted for killing his wife and unborn son. The place was Modesto California. The case was well covered by the media.
Truly ripe for a test. We asked, How can this guy be convicted of murdering the unborn when 5000 women kill the unborn every day in the US? This was ideal to get traffic to a forum.
The Project Assignment:
Coin on the events that surrounded the case and spur controversy to guage belief patterns. What do people believe and why?
The Method:
Public Forum,
Details:
We placed a few free articles along with some paid ones in several small rag-sheets in northern California. Simple headlines that followed were;
"How to Out-Fox the Foxes", 50 legal tricks attorneys don't want you to know!
"Slavery Returning in the USA" History Repets itself! (Picture of chained man)
"Is Mass Murder Legal?" #####################
"How to Get Away With Murder" ####################
And there were many others specific to the case mentiond above but we'd rather not repeat the headlines.
Each advertisement had some small vague details, just enough to get people to visit the forum we posted. In 3 Weeks 2200 people became registered users at the forums. Controversy is an understatement. People took real emotional envolvement in the forum before we took it down a few weeks later. In the five weeks it was up the site had phenomonial traffic. We blocked all bots, made it public password accssed, and no advertising in the forums.
It got so out of hand that, members were threatening one another, Blacks went i-rate thinking the slavery article was directed at them when in fact it was directed at the corporate ownership of prisons. (Its getting hard to arrest good help these days) and we likely had more cops and attorneys sign up than I'd ever seen because of the Outfox the foxes article.
=======================================================
You need to write better headlines for your books in review. You need to create some reason for visiting your site above and beyond book reviews. Thats about as exciting as catching syphilis. Give something to your visitors and give them a COMPELLING REASON to visit. More important a COMPELLING REASON to JOIN.

I have got a lot of positive feedback from my existing members.
I'm using the default style of phpBB! If that's a mess, then I don't know what is not. I also used the Smartor' EZPortal. I suppose that's a mess too. I spent a lot of time in making my site look like what it is. Since I'm using phpBB, it's tough to customize the look and feel of the site completely. I've also modded it heavily and it's tough to change the style and templates.
I don't care to make my site into a "free-for-all" chat forum. It's meant for serious book reviews and discussions and I'm not going to change it just to get a few new members. No way! I don't want to change the focus of my site. I find it hard to understand what you're trying to accomplish by bashing the nature of my site and forum. Maybe it makes you feel good.
For me, quality is more important than quantity and I am no longer desperate to see my forum grow so huge. What's so wrong about reviewing books? I find it fun to discuss and review books and I cater to that audience who likes to read and discuss their favourite books.
Controversy and deliberately provocative topics? Be a troll on my own forum? Not a chance! Even if I get a 1000 members by that, I will never do it.
Anyway thanks for taking your time to review my forum. But no. I'm not going to change it much. It's good enough as it is and I'm now beginning to get a few new members.
No more reviews please!
I'm not going to change anything so please don't waste time posting in this topic any more. Unless you want to, of course.

So, people are trying to help you but instead of listening to their advise you say "you're all wrong, I am perfect, my site is perfect, and people are just stupid for not realising it".
With that attitude it's little wonder people aren't flocking to your site in droves.

No. I said already that I don't want people flocking to my site in droves and post useless trash. My site is a serious reviews and discussion site and not a free-for-all chat site for the mentally deficient.
I've taken all the advise I can, but the hectoring attitude by saying that my site is trash and rubbish is what provoked me into that response. Be positive. Criticize, but don't use strong language. I spent a lot of time in making my site and I don't want people to just dismiss it as "TRASH" the moment they see the front page.
Content is everything. Style is not. I am looking for quality content. Even if it is not popular it does not matter.
If anybody wants to review my site, I suggest you CLICK all the links on the navigation toolbar, visit each and every page and give a sufficiently in-depth review with your feedback and suggestions.
Simply saying that my site looks like a "JOKE" and your "HEADLINES" are poor are simply not in the right spirit.
People, stop being lazy! Take a good look at every aspect of my site before reviewing it.
I have already asked for the forum owner to close this stupid topic. I never wanted a review of my site anyway and this topic was moved from the original forum and the whole purpose of the topic has been changed from giving me helpful suggestions to just trash-talking my site into oblivion.
No. No. No. You people have got it all wrong. I am very much open to suggestions and help. The only thing I don't like is people just clicking on my front page and then trashing the whole site.
Book reviewing may be boring to many of you. You may never even know what a book is. I don't pretend to be an academic, but I think many of you know less English that a first grader.
Does that statement hurt any of you? If it does, then you'll know why I am hurt when you people tell me that my site is a "Joke".
