Hi,

i'm new to this site and know very little about computers!
I use broadband at home (NTL is the service provider) and things were running fine until recently.
i cannot get onto the internet and have been told by my service provider that my pc won't connect because of an ip address problem. The LAN is connected and there is no problem with the modem.
I've tried removing my firewall (Norton/symantec) and also uninstalled windows SP2 but to no avail. I've also run antispyware software and found there were a number of adware files which have since been removed...but still cannot connect.

i am on a wireless network via a router if that helps.

any ideas?

If you're sure you have everything set-up correctly in terms of IP Addresses it could be a DNS issue, I suggest pinging this IP address: 216.239.39.99

If you get replies then it is most probably a DNS issue and therefore need to check that you have input the correct name server IP Addresses in your TCP/IP settings.

If it still doesn't work, go to Start, Run, and type in cmd, click OK. Type in ipconfig/all and post the information that comes up.

You're more than likely going to need to run the Winsock fix that dlh6213 suggested. Try typing this in a command line:

ipconfig /release /all

and then

ipconfig /renew *

If you get a message stating "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket", your TCP/IP stack is hosed, and Winsockfix will work. If Winsockfix doesn't work, you can do it manually using these instructions:

Basically, what happens is that something in your TCP/IP (Winsock) stack got corrupted by spyware (usually SAVE NOW!), and when you removed it, that junk was pulled from your TCP/IP stack, too. The IP address you currently have is called an APIPA (Automatic Private IP Address), and those usually are only present when there's no IP address assigned either manually or by a DHCP server, or communication with whatever server that gives you an IP address is down. In your case, it's the later scenario, and it's due to a corrupted TCP/IP stack..

Did you try the release & renew suggested by Alex?

are you using a route? because it seems like your computer is gettin denied an ip adress. the ip you showed is the deafault for windows. if you are using a router there maybe be a conflict in it's settings that is now allowing you computer to get an ip adress.

i've removed my firewall (norton antiviru) and SP2. I've tried connecting directly to the modem via ethernet (to check it was not the router) and still no joy. Ive also tried winsockfix (running the program and manually in the registry) to no avail.

it's extremely odd but a friend of mine was having this same exact problem but with a regular router and changed the router and we then got internet connection. i would say call your router company and have them trouble shoot it but talking to most router companies is like talking to a wall. it is always worth a shot. with this problem i wanted to rip my hair out because i could not understand why the computer was not finding and ip adress. after a new router and numerous driver updates for my nic card and other hardware it finally began to find and ip adress. the ie is still running very slow and i am in the process of trying to fix it for him. i figure out anything i surely will let you know. i have seem to have gotten farther then you though so i suggest trouble shooting your router or maybe trying a new one. i mean, you can always take it back to the store :]
