I am having a tough time fixing this... I cannot get into windows update page. I can get to other ms windows pages. When I go to update, I get a blank screen and done at the bottom of the browser. Open IE and go to Tools\Internet Options. Hit the security Tab and select the default button. Hit apply and then ok. Try to update again.
You can also put the site into your trusted zone.
If that does not work, perhaps it is Microsoft's AntiSpyWare that is preventing the install? Try disabling protection temporarily and try again.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

ok...so i tried all of that and it has not helped...i just did a full virus check using Zonelabs and I found a few viruses that ZL said it cannot fix ... maybe these are hurting me ... Again no win update, media player is not working, and Active X installer never works.

OK. You need to locate those two files on your PC and delete them manually.

Done. I still cant use 50% of the buttons on yahoo mail. Modzilla is working fine. When I goto Control Panel / Uninstall program there is no Microsoft Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player, which I thought was weird. I thought to start from scratch with those two apps.

Thoughts? Do I need to do a reinstall of XP?

OK. I also just found this too, when I try to use my file explorer and then search. The left nav that opens has a dog at the bottom and the header to that nav is 'Search Companion' ... no search options come up and all that happens is if you right-click on the dog. he scratches himself.

I also have the exact multiple problems as you are describing. Can't search in explorer, cant get to Windows update, no Windows media player even though I just downloaded new version.I have run multiple spyware & Anti Virus programs to no avail.Dell said I need to reinstall everything. I hope not.
