My colleagues laptop had a problem where it kept rebooting unexpectedly and required fixing, I reset the BIOS and I could not boot into windows and the windows setup saying there was no hard drive installed after changing the AHCI setting the hard drive was detected, may I ask what this setting is used for and what advantage does it give anything?

check out this link...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance...ller_Interface

AHCI..one of the controller for HDD interface...
or you can try searching the web AHCI vs. IDE
TRY MY SUGGESTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK
Do other alternative first..cheap and easy ways..
Don't take out money from your pocket when you're not so sure that it will solve the problem..
