Mouse cursor trouble on a two-monitor system

I'm running xp professional on a fairly new, fairly high-powered Dell with two monitors.
Once in a while, sometimes when I drag a window from one monitor to the other, the mouse cursor turns in to the four-arrow-one-in-each-direction pattern and sticks there. The only way to get the regular cursor back is to reboot, or open the mouse properties box in the control panel, go to the pointers tab, make some trivial change, and click OK.
Anybody have any ideas that would help prevent this behavior?
