Hi! My friend's PC isn't booting anymore neither the POST test or memory checking. When you turn on the computer, a black screen appears with a message like this:
Award BIOS block 1998
BIOS checksum error
Insert floppy disk A:
Insert system disk and press enter.
The computer beeps, but it is an unusual beep. I know the beep codes for ram error, video card error. but this beep is different from them.
My theory is that the BIOS is damaged. Can a virus kill a computer's BIOS? If the BIOS has been damaged, is there a way so that I can resurrect the BIOS? tnx.
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
MSI K9VGM-V
1.5 GB DDR2 PC400/3200
NVIDIA® GeForce 7200GS 256mb

If shorting the CMOS to clear it fails, then it's your motherboard.
I had this once and there had been a mains glitch that damaged a number of mobo items and got the same message.
