how to send the total amount to paypal

Hi. I am building a web site with online payment using paypal. I have a shopping cart which I built and I managed to include the buy now button from paypal, but I the customer has to enter the total amount themselves. I cant send the total amount.
Also how can I get the confirmation from paypal and inform customer the payment was successful.
