Memory read/write error when opening programs.

Just a long shot, my friends computer is having a few difficulties:

Once windows xp is running, everytime you try to open a program, it comes up with an error saying "Only part of the memory write process request completed"

Tried system restore but wont open, although you can dial up to the internet and nothing works.

Is this a hardware error, a virus or a format job?

Thanks in advance
Chris

What type of system is it? Do you have any diagnostics you can run on it?

It could be bad memory. I suggest running something like memtest86 to check out the memory, or if it's a brand-name system, try some of their specific diagnostics.
