I know what some of my problems are, but would sure appreciate on any pointers on how to address them, and I'm quite sure this system has problems I'm not fully aware of. For example I know dolsp.dll is one of my problems. That's a relatively new addition to my machine and I suspect its presence is contributing to the fact that I can't even get online anymore, and I'm sure it's just the tip of the iceberg. I had to copy the HJT log to a floppy and bring it to this other machine in order to send this message. I'd really appreciate some suggestions on what to do next! I have run Adaware, Spybot S&D and Microsoft Anti-spyware (beta).

Download LSPfix from here
On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. Check all instances of "dolsp.dll" (and nothing else), and move them to the "Remove" pane. Then click Finish.

Uninstall Mywebsearch and P2P Networking from add/remove programs.

Run Hijackthis and go to the process viewer by going to Config, Misc Tools, Process Viewer, to unload all instances of the following running processes;

By the way, do I need to have all the other 3 people who have accounts, and who are all "administrators", on this Windows XP machine go through some of the same steps you outlined for me? The step involving HKCU got me to thinking about that.

When I tried to uninstall P2P Networking I got the following error:
"An error occurred while trying to remove P2P Networking2. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove P2P Networking2 from the Add or Remove programs list?"

I'm guessing it's probably OK to click Yes, but I chose to click No for now and run it past you first.

FWIW, 0b94knan.exe was not running at the time I ran HJT, though it had been running a few minutes earlier. I know because I have been in the habit lately of capturing snapshots using startuplist.exe, saving the logs to a unique filename and using windiff to compare one log file to the next.

When I got to the step where I ran the HJT scan and started selecting registry items to remove, this entry was no longer present:

This one could not be deleted by me manually; I didn't notice a way to tell HJT to delete a folder, so pointed it at each of the files in the folder and in the folder under this one:
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs
OK, actually I started to do that, but I guess I accidentally clicked Yes on that reboot prompt before I got finished going through all the files. After it rebooted I repeated that process and got through all the files. When I did it correctly and rebooted it came right back. Microsoft Anti-Spyware spots it trying to install itself and asks me if I want to block. I tell it to block it, it does so, and tells me to reboot. I reboot, and right off the bat it catches the thing trying to install again!

Incidentally, these folders were not found:

You may have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

When I got up this morning Microsoft AntiSpyware (AS) reported finding these 5 threats:
iSearch.DesktopSearch
eXact.Downloader
IST.ISTbar
HuntBar
WebSearch Toolbar (AS calls the threat level "High" but also says it is under investigation)
Maybe one of them was in a HijackThis backup folder so probably not a re-infestation. I'm afraid most of the others were true re-infestations. I told AS to go ahead and remove them.

Looks like you have the old L2M .
download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Do you mean that the version of l2mfix I got was outdated? I just pulled it from http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe the other day.

I got the VX2 cleaner for Ad-Aware and ran it and it reported my system was already clean. Are you saying that the continued attempts to install iSearch.DesktopSearch are suggesting that this system has VX2? If that's the case should I maybe stop telling MS AntiSpyware to block installation of this threat (iSearch.DesktopSearch) and then have Ad-Aware try again to remove VX2?

Also, I may be a little confused about Ad-Aware version numbers. The page you pointed me to (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software...x2cleaner.shtml) explicitly states that "The VX2 Cleaner works with all editions of Ad-Aware 6 build 181." On the other hand, when I went to http://www.lavasoftusa.com and browsed to the Add-ons I got to a very similar page where the build number was not mentioned. I actually downloaded the file from both pages and used WinDiff locally to convince myself they were identical, so maybe this stuff about build 181 is a red herring. I'm pretty sure my copy of Ad-Aware SE is fairly recent, and the "about" window says it's build 1.05. If I look at the version stamp on Ad-Aware.exe itself it shows as 6.2.0.206.

Build 1.05 is the most recent. If the plug-in worked, you have the correct one.
I meant that you have an older version of the L2M infection.

1.) Run Vx2Finder click on the 'Click to find VX2.BetterInternet' button.
2.) Then click 'make log'.
3.) Highlight all the files and click the 'Delete these files' button.
4.) You will be left with notice about one to be deleted on reboot.
5.) Reboot
6.) Run VX2Finder again and click on these buttons in the right pane:
- user agent
- Guardian.reg
- restore policy
7.) Exit and reboot once more.
8.) Run VX2Finder again click on the 'Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet' Button.
9.) Click 'Make Log'
10.) Post the first log and the second log in your next thread
