For some reason program installations cannot create new start menu shortcuts...

  #1
Mar 7th, 2005
I have a very weird problem, so weird that I've not been able to find even one single instance of anyone else experiencing it.

You know how when you install a new program on your system, typically at the end of installation the program will automatically create a program group and shortcuts in the start menu? Well for some reason programs cannot automatically create shortcuts.

Here's what typically happens... the install will be humming along fine then I'll get hit with errors:

"cannot create <shortcut>.lnk"

I'll get that error or something very similar (i.e. fail to create; etc) for as many shortcuts as it tried to create.

The program works fine, it's just it couldn't create shortcuts in the start menu for some perverse reason.

When I check the start menu, there will typically be a new folder created corresponding to the program, however the folder will contain *no shortcuts* and will be blank.

Now, if i manually try to create a shortcut and drop it in the start menu myself, I CAN do this.
It's just when programs try to do it that the problem occurs, it seems. It's limited only to shortcuts, too, as the install is able to create new folders.

Anyone have any idea why this might be occuring?

Also another possibly related problem... my quicklaunch bar settings are not saved on reboot. The icons rearrange to default and it refuses to stay open. This problem is more common, however none of the common issues behind it are causing it. I don't have the wsaupdater.exe issues, I don't have the nosavesettings key, etc.

If it helps these problems seemed to come about when I upgraded to xp2. I had lots of problems with it. For awhile explorer was crashing every time i right clicked but i figured out how to fix that (there was something in the shell that was screwing it up and i had to remove it from the menu with a program).

These two problems now just have me stumped. Any answers?

Hi sorry for the delay ,I have to say I've never seen you first problem before ,so lets try the following if you want !
...........
This problem could occur because of Spyware , go on over to the Security section of this fourm and post you problem along with a hijackthis log .
Spyware & Trojans and Other Nasties
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Please Don't post the hijackthis log in this section Thanks .
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Please do this.
Download 'Hijack This!'. HijackThis
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Or HERE if that link fails to work or you don't have a zip program installed .

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Hi not much in you log ,Not thats causing you problem with shortcuts i dont think .you missed my request to move to the security section wuth you log ,I'll get someone to move it over maybe .
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Also you have a proxi server setup correct ,the ip address belongs to the folowing ,this is your ISP .
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 218.25.35.199:80

OrgName: Asia Pacific Network Information Centre
OrgID: APNIC
Address: PO Box 2131
City: Milton
StateProv: QLD
PostalCode: 4064
Country: AU

ReferralServer: whois://whois.apnic.net

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.
You might want to print out or copy & paste to notePad , these instructions as you will need to close this browser window to fix with hijackthis !
<<<
you can fix these unless you want to use the yahoo redirect for home and search .most fix them .

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...://my.yahoo.com

Yes ,i would think maybe you should go to add and remove programs in the control panel ,and look there and uninstall from there and then run hijack and fix anything releated to the two in the log .
also you could fix this .
