So it has been pretty much deemed that my motherboard is dead or at least that I have a problem with it. If this is the case, does anyone know if it is possible to retrieve files from my computer if I don't want to replace the motherboard?

You should be able to get a usb adapter from somewhere like ebay that will allow you to connect it's hard drive to another pc quite easily and cheaply.

another option you can try is by purchasing an external hard drive enclosure and using that disk as an external drive to a working computer.
