"My computer" has disappeared!!

Hi, I'm new to this site and need help!
I cannot access some desktop icons (my computer, my documents, control panel etc) - I get an error message saying 'Windows Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close down'. I can access the internet and all other office packages but the only way I can access the documents saved in my documents etc is via the run programme.
I have tried to to do a restore to an earlier time but I get an error message saying the restore was unsuccessful.
I have done a virus check and nothing was found. I have accessed the computer in safe mode and can access my computer via this way.
Any ideas or help greatful - thanks
