Problem with IE connecting to internet

Had to go back to a restore point after problem with Vista. After that, had problems with Norton 360 (reloaded)-- it would not set to automatically check for updates-- and iTunes (reloaded)--could not make connection to iStore. I think, however, everything is related to IE 8 being unable to connect to internet. Firefox, which I use as default browser, connects so I didn't immediately see the problem. I assume both programs are trying to use IE and are blocked because IE cannot connect. Tried lots of fixes but nothing worked. Not a problem with DNS or updates (IE 7 now has same problem). I'm at a loss.
