Installing OS 10.3 - n00b help

Hello all,
i just got a g4 400mhz mac with 128 mb memory dvd writter and zip drive, the problem is that when i install os 10.3 i format the new hdd then start the install the install fails at the point where its creating the base system part 2, some times the kernal freeks out and gives me alot of weird data on the screen, i have changed the memory, hdd, video card, dvd drive and still dont know whats going on i know the cds are good because they get as far as installing the actual subsystem. please help im totaly lost on a mac.
