I always use siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com also there are hundreds of free backlink checker tool available like backlinkwatch, iwebtool etc....

You can use Yahoo to check the back links just type link:http://www.yoursite.com
or instead there is a site called baclinkwatch, search it on google and you can determine the exact no of backlinks to your site

Check out googles webmaster tools, that gives you a lot of information for free.
