Ubuntu is one of the latest HOT ones.
You can get a book (so you've got a reference) that also has the installation cd. (which I bought) or you can download the cd *.iso images and make your own cd.

I bought the book "practical guide to ubuntu linux"
it came with the cd for ubuntu 8.1
for ubuntu 8.1 ("intrepid ibex" version) go to

I think Redhat (RHEL 5), fedora is best for server point of view, if you looking for desktop then ubuntu, suse 11.1, Mandriva, slackware, is best
for there amazing look & feel.
