What is the concept of supplemental index of google. Can any one explain it.

As far as I know, having same or almost same webpage in multiple domains will lead to supplemental indexing.

From web I have read also other reasons, but they doesn't seem to be so obvious.

Its Google's secondary database that includes pages of less importance, the duplicate content may appear here after filtering.
