Intel on Apple

I've been a Mac user for a couple years now. My first Apple was a 400 Mhz Powerbook G3 2000 aka 'Pismo' or 'Firewire'. It ran OS 9.0.4 and let me tell you moving from OS 9 to OS X made all the difference for keeping me from switching back to Windows.

I never had any major problems with my windows machines, just minor annoyances. Once I upgraded to Windows 2k pro the blue screens were dramatically reduced, even on the same computer. Except that all Windows based computers seem to dramatically slow over time while my macintosh keeps on keeping on.

When I first read that Apple was possibly switching to Intel based processors i immediately became concerned. Not INTEL! I thought. I began to wonder if Uncle Steve had lost it a little bit. But as the reactionary shock wore off I began to talk about it with friends in the Apple community and even after Monday's announcement I began to feel much more upbeat about the future for apple computing.

Once again Uncle Steve has managed to stay ahead of the curve. The Rosetta technology that will allow PPC programs to be run on an Intel based mac should really help the process. That and the fact that Darwin already runs on x86 makes the outlook seem brighter.

What really sold me on the whole intel deal was the reaction I kept seeing from users on rumor sites and forums freaking out about the switch. Something about their reaction told me that if all those people thought it had to be such a bad thing that it must actually be a pretty good idea.
