Windows 2000 startup

I have Windows 2000 and when I switch on it runs OK but just before it displays desk top icons, I get a blue frozen screen. If it went over this it would be OK. I can use the PC by switching off in this mode and immediately switching back on - it then goes through OK to the desk top.
