Hi,
I am only new to this forum, and I can't help but notice that there are a few people showing some concern about Norton Anti virus not working on their x64 systems. Well , I do not find that surprising, as I had given up on their products years ago, probably because I had so many of the bugs somehow in the using of their product.
I haven't paid for a program of this type for quite a few comfortable years... The re is a product called.. Avast.. it is a Home edition, and in being such is by their company policies a free product...
Try it out, you have nothing to lose, and only peace of mind to gain..
No, I do not receive any commissions or gratuities for referring you lot there, after all , what is 15 % of nothing..??
The web address is .. http://www.avast.com/
It is apparently compatible with Vista, I am running xp64
and have experienced no problems with it whatsoever..
Nothing ventured... nothing gained.
Best regards Ken

Why install Windows XP anything? Stick with Windows 98/ME! I have been using ME since its conception and I personally think is THE BEST operating system Microsoft have released bar none!! Yes, before you ask I have used Windows XP, BUT its Rubbish!! Looks like a child of 4 has designed the interface, and it takes oover the computer! Its tell YOU what to do, not the other way round!! Stick with tried and tested 98/ME!

Well, the problem with that would be integrating the ability to handle more modern technologies, like wireless. I have a friend who uses ME, but he can't get wireless to work. I survive on wireless.
That and I can't use all my new programs on ME or 98. That would probably cripple me for a while, and that I cannot afford at this juncture. If I really want to, I can put 98 on my computer, too.
But the question at hand is whether or not x64 will be a problem for me.
Ok, I understand what your saying about Windows ME not being able to run the newer software, but I do not undestand about wireless. I have a d-link wireless router wich works better in ME than it ever did in Windows XP. A LOT faster speeds and a further range. Plus with Windows XP I had to install the NIGHTMARE called service pack 2. Not an issue with Windows ME, just a case of plugging in and going!! Also, regarding newer software not working with ME, is newer always better? In my experience it is not.

I understand that, but I can't replace my newer programs with older ones as easily, and I don't have too much time to work with. I can get new programs for free, because I'm in CSE. I can't necessarily get Windows ME by any means. The only Windows (excluding every xp) I can get is 2k, which sucked hardcore.
But this is a discussion for the ME forum. Let's stick to the topic at hand.
Are there severe risks with using only xp 64, in pertinence to software and hardware compatability?

Via K8T800 configuration using the Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard:
• Cannot load OS using SATA. Must use SATA driver floppy for OS install to see hard disk. After going through text-mode and gui-mode install, and after the reboot the system will immediately BSOD. This happens with both the VIA SATA controller and the Promise 378 SATA controller.
• The OS can be loaded using an IDE drive. However, loading the Promise 378 SATA controller and attaching a SATA drive to it, the drive will not be seen in the OS. This appears to be a driver issue.
is there any work-around for this?
I have WinXP 64-bit SP2 and a SATA drive with the A8V Deluxe MB. the problem is that when I enable Promise in boot loader, I then do "F6" + "S" to load my driver from floppy (which I got on asus.com for XP64), it loads the driver fine...but when I go to continue the Windows Installation, it cannot find a harddrive connect, and fails installation.
We invested in x64 XP Pro on our 3 new systems workstations only to find that our database system would not run on that platform. The software used is SAGE ACT 2007. When we contacted SAGE we just got a negative response - nothing - zilch - nowt! They do not support x64 and have no intention of updating their software. The only solution was to get x86 32bit versions of XP Pro. That leaves us with 3 unactivated OEM x64 XP Pro. Anyone interested ?
