winnt.sif file missing when installing windows xp pro

i am trying to install windows xp pro but the error message "winnt.sif is corrupt or missing. please can someone help.
also "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" comes up and i cant open windows :cry:

usually a bad cd drive will get this problem. You can sometimes trick a bad cd drive by making a temporary cd copy & trading disks thru the instalation process.

Is this a standard copy of XP Pro, or an OEM version? It occurs to me that winnt.sif shouldn't be there unless someone puts it there. At least, that's what Google would indicate to me...
