Everytime I attempt to enter the "Find a Zip Code" tab on usps.com I receive the message:"Cannot find server or DNS Error Explorer". My AddressGrabber program relies on that link to verify that the addresses I'm saving to my database are correct, so it has been a bit frustrating. Here is what I have done to date:

1. Downloaded, updated, ran CWShredder and then rebooted
2. Ran Adaware making sure that the archives were searched
3. Downloaded, updated, ran SpyBot and then rebooted
4. Downloaded, updated, ran HijackThis and then rebooted
5. I have updated Windows XP Home and IE6

Still, No Luck....

Before all of these scans I ran my problem past the USPS IT Manager, the Dell Software Support Center, the IT Manager at eGrabber (AddressGrabber Software), an IT guy at my ISP Time Warner/RoadRunner, I consulted the Windows XP support pages on numerous occassions, and I spoke to my own company's IT Manager. No one understands why I cannot enter the "Find a Zip Code" link on the usps.com site. I'm exhasted...

the engineers could see the failure on your XP systems, and they did a lot of tests on the inhouse XP machines but could not replicate.They had asked me on Friday for a further week, where they can install similar programs ( firewalls/Antivirus ) etc to see if they can replicate in that way. Hello Dennis, welcome to our site

Our announcement posted at the top of this forum does state that HijackThis logs should only be posted in our Viruses, Spyware, and other Nasties forum, but I've deleted your duplicate post in that forum, primarily due to the fact that your log shows no indication that malicious infections are the root of your problem. Given that, and the fact that our posting rules prohibit asking the same question in multiple forums, I think this forum is better suited to your question/problem, even if it does contain a HJT log.


It would be good to clarify one thing regarding your problem: is the "find a zip code" link on UPs' site the only link/site where you encounter the "Cannot find server..." messages, or does it happen at other sites as well? If so, please elaborate.

I recently discovered on other link that created the Cannot Find Server or DNS Error Internet Explorer. Ironically, it was on the Dell technical support page, the "Chat with Portable Support" link to be specific. :rolleyes:

It can be difficult to track down connection problems when they only occur at one or two sites, but here are a few things you can try:


1. Disable any firewall software you might have running.


2. Manually clean out the folders where "stale" files accumulate over the course of Internet surfing and general computer usage:

- Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: the following steps will delete the contents of all Temp/Temporary folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Cookies
2. Local Settings\Temp
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.


3. Go to Start Menu->Programs->Accessories and click on Command Prompt to open a DOS window. At the DOS prompt, type the following command and then hit Enter:

ipconfig /flushdns

Close the DOS window when the command completes.


4. Although usually meant to repair more global problems with Internet Explorer, you can try downloading and running the free IEFix utility.
