I posted over in the Windows XP forum, but not much help popped up other than come here. So here I am, and here's my problem: My PC will NOT boot up in regular mode, only in any form of safe mode. So here I am in Safe Mode with networking, looking for help.

When I'm booting up it goes through BIOS well, then the Windows bootup screen pops up with that scrolling bar underneath the Windows logo. After that, I get a flash that looks like the Blue Screen o' Death and then it either reboots or freezes. It freezes more than anything, and I can't figure out why I tried to use system restore to roll back to a few dates last week, but nothing works. I can't quite figure out what's causing this rather irritating problem, but here's my HiJack This log so hopefully someone who understands this can help me :-D Thanx a ton in advance, and I hope to see you all again...in regular windows.

Download CWShredder 2.14 from here:

Run it, and press the Fix button (not scan). Close all windows before hitting the Fix button.

For every User listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (not the folders themselves):

Cookies
History
Local Settings\Temp
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Delete the entire contents of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Delete the entire contents of your C:\Temp folder (if you have one).

Do a search for *.tmp and delete all entries found.

Go to Start, Run, and type in cleanmgr, and then click OK. Select the drive XP is on, and check the boxes for Downloaded Program Files (move any files you wish to keep out of this folder first), Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files, Offline Files, (and Compress old files & Catalog files for the Content Indexer if you wish), and then click OK. Click Yes to confirm you want these files deleted. It may take awhile for this to run, please be patient.

Note: if any of these temporary files cannot be deleted while in normal mode, try Safe Mode.

Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot, close any open browser windows, scan with hijackthis, and post a new log please.

I appreciate the post! Now here's an odd story for ya:

Two days ago I was mulling over this PC problem, and my friend happened to call. I was telling him about my dilemma and he said he had the same thing when he first installed SP2. I told him I've had SP2 installed since September and no problems, but he insisted I uninstalled SP2. So, I did...and now Windows works again. My questions to you are this:

1)Why did SP2 screw up now and not when I first installed it?
2) Should I do all those things you've posted?
3) Should I reinstall SP2?

Yes, except for the in-place upgrade.

I would certainly try it, but not until after your system has been cleaned up. If it causes problems again, you can just remove it now that you know the cause.

After you've run the Shredder and cleaned out all the Temp files, post a new hijackthis log.
