Hehe, this is classic.
The romantic image of an über-programmer is someone who fires up Emacs, types like a machine gun, and delivers a flawless final product from scratch. I do recall saying that there were exceptions, but in my experience, the majority of teachers only teach because they're not good enough to actually write code for a living.
my c++ prof was the team leader for his programming AIX team at IBM. He's also retired from TI.
there's one of the exceptions
It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to students that have had prior exposure to Basic; as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration.
