trojan horse startpage 19j problem

OS: windows 98

I apologise for my ignorance in advance. i have had this problem for a week or so now and have run spybot and ad-aware to try and rid the problem. AVG keeps popping up when i open IE telling me of this virus and healing it makes no difference. My startpage seems to be called 'about:blank'. The only way i can access other web pages is through my favourites folder. I have done quite a lot of reading on the internet and it has become quite clear that i'm out of my depth. I've got as far as hijackthis and saved a log file to post here so here goes;

Download CWShredder 2.15 from here.

Download\'SpSeHjfix\' to the desktop and then
right click a blank part of the desktop and select new folder, call it spfix
unzip the file into that folder.

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Run the shredder and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

A Required.DLL file, OLEACC.DLL, was not found.
Certain versions of Win 98 either did not have that dll at all, or had an outdated version of it. The following Microsoft article tells you how to get the right version of the file:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;en-us;810684
"May the Wombat of Happiness snuffle through your underbrush."

Please do not contact me by email or PM for help. We're all volunteers here, and only have so much free time to dedicate to our efforts.

However, if I've been working on a thread with you already, and seem to have "forgotten" your thread, please do send me a message. I try not to let things slip through the cracks, but it does happen sometimes.

p.s

this seems to have got rid of it! Is there anything else i need to do? Espescially to stop it happening again? Please bear in mind i have only 64MB RAM and only 59% resources free and 1.04 GB of freesapce (pentium II), so anything i need on top of all the things i've downloaded already is probably going to clog up the computer even more. Aside from the obvious, like deleting temporary internet files and disk defragmentation etc, is ther anything clever i can do to create more space? remember i'm a complete novice.

thanks all.

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

Post a new log when done. Nothing serious there. Sorry I overlooked this before.

Check to see what the size of Internet Explorers cache is (TIF). I would set it at about 50Mb if it is more than that.

Better .

===============

Runn HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111113458} - file://C:\WINDOWS\Tempor~1\Content.IE5\ZWU8LVE3\explorer7[1].cab

Now, with all windows closed (including Internet Explorer) except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

That should do you nicely.
