Help IPB vs. phpBB

  #1
Jul 11th, 2005
Okay, I currently have IPB, and I really like it. It's quite powerful. But I like the way phpBB allows you to sort of export news articles to a front page before your forums, etc. So I'm thinking about switching.
IPB vs. phpBB... Advantages, disadvantages of each? Which would you go with?

You can send news items from the forum to a portal that can be the first page of the forum in IPB too. So what I'd do is have IPB.

vBulletin can also do that!

On a sidenote, I'd advise against using phpBB as it is pretty insecure. If you have to choose between IPB and phpBB then IPB it's gonna be!

When I used to use IPB then there was some inbuilt portal system and there was also an SSI include system for latest threads on homepage. I don't know of new versions!

With vBulletin you have an option of using vBadvanced (available as a free addon).

Be sure to copy down your box id, you will need it later.

Then, login into your account.

Go to "Shoutbox Configuration" on the Admin Page, then click "Colorset/Theme". Choose a theme that matches your main forum skin. You can fool around with the other controls as well, if you wish.

Step One
Go To your forum, Admin Control Panel -> System Setting's -> IP Dynamic Lite
+ENABLE IPDynamic Lite? Yes
+Enable Recent Articles? No
+Enable Recent Discussions?
Max. no recent discussions to show: 5
Max. length of topic titles: 20
+Show User / Guest Info box? No
+Show online users? Yes
+Show search box? No
+Enable skin selection choice dropdown? No
+Show Poll? No
+Show Site Navigation Menu? No
+Show Affiliates / Favoured Sites box?
Put all your affliates in the text box below this, HTML allowed (Button codes, text links, etc.)

Step Two

Go to Admin Control Panel -> Skin's & Template's -> HTML Template's -> Choose your Skin and Manage HTML -> IP Dynamic Lite -> MAIN TEMPLATE

Delete everything in the textbox and replace it with the following code. If you think something might go wrong, be sure to copy everything already in it and paste it into a text editor such as Notepad.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

Everything in red needs to be edited in some way, green is where you put your own news. You can use this format:
<b>m/d/y:</b> YOURNEWS<br>

Step Three

Go To Admin Control Panel -> Skin's & Template's -> HTML Template's -> Choose your Skin and Manage HTML -> IP Dynamic Lite -> csite_javascript

Below everything in the textbox, add:

<script>
nereidFadeObjects = new Object();
nereidFadeTimers = new Object();

function nereidFade(object, destOp, rate, delta){
if (!document.all)
return
if (object != "[object]"){ //do this so I can take a string too
setTimeout("nereidFade("+object+","+destOp+","+rate+","+delta+")",0);
return;
}

clearTimeout(nereidFadeTimers[object.sourceIndex]);

diff = destOp-object.filters.alpha.opacity;
direction = 1;
if (object.filters.alpha.opacity > destOp){
direction = -1;
}
delta=Math.min(direction*diff,delta);
object.filters.alpha.opacity+=direction*delta;

if (object.filters.alpha.opacity != destOp){
nereidFadeObjects[object.sourceIndex]=object;
nereidFadeTimers[object.sourceIndex]=setTimeout("nereidFade(nereidFadeObjects["+

object.sourceIndex+"],"+destOp+","+rate+","+delta+")",rate);
}
}

</script>

Step Four
Go to Admin Control Panel -> Skin's & Template's -> HTML Template's -> Choose your Skin and Manage HTML -> IP Dynamic Lite -> Affiliates / Recommended Sites.

Delete everything in the box, and put in this code:
<br />
<div class='tableborder'>
<div class='maintitle'><{CAT_IMG}> Affiliates</div>
<div class='tablepad' style="height:70;">
<marquee scrollamount="2" scrolldelay="1" onMouseover="this.scrollAmount=1" onMouseout="this.scrollAmount=2" direction="down" height="125">
$links
</marquee>
</div>
</div>
Step Five
Go to Admin Control Panel -> Skin's & Template's -> HTML Template's -> Choose your Skin and Manage HTML -> IP Dynamic Lite -> Online Users Box.

Delete everything in the box, and put in this code:
<div class='tableborder'>
<div class='maintitle'><{CAT_IMG}> <a href="{ibf.script_url}act=Online">{ibf.lang.online_title}</a></div>
<div class='tablepad'>
<span class='desc'>$breakdown<br />$split<br />$names</span>
</div>
</div>
That's it! Your S-Splash page is now installed.

Customizing:
-Going to Admin Control Panel -> Skin's & Template's -> HTML Template's -> Choose your Skin and Manage HTML -> IP Dynamic Lite -> MAIN TEMPLATE, and editing the code (Don't remove the copyright!)
-Going to Admin Control Panel -> System Settings ->IP Dynamic Lite, and switching on some of the other boxes. These will automatically appear on your splash page. You can add: Welcome Box, Search, Site Navigation, Change Skin, Poll, and Latest Posts
-Adding your own news, where the code is green. You can use this format:
<b>m/d/y:</b> YOURNEWS<br>

Want to use a video instead of a image? Go to the MAIN TEMPLATE code, and replace this

<a href="http://YOURFORUM.clicdev.com/f/index.php?act=idx"><img onmouseover="nereidFade(this,100,20,5)" style="FILTER:

alpha(opacity=30)" onmouseout="nereidFade(this,30,20,5)" src="URLTOSPLASHIMAGE"></a>

with this
<a href="http://YOURFORUM.clicdev.com/f/index.php?act=idx">
<img border="0" dynsrc="LINKTOYOURVIDEO" start="fileopen" width="385" height="400"></a>

HOpe it helps you.

None of your features are builtin or forum specific.
Firefox: no, its not the end all solution, it has its own issues and in time it will be just as insecure as IE, when its hit Firefox 6, if it makes it that far. Oh, and AOL pays for it, incase you didn't know.

Microsoft & Windows: If you hate it so much, move to linux, or bsd, or anything else, stop complaning and move on.
Good starting places: Gentoo Novell SUSE Fedora Core Apple

This post really pissed me off

  #9
Oct 21st, 2006
Imdb post for the film "Flight 93" very sad movie) "As usual, the men are the ones breaking down the doors and taking the risks while the girls are hiding and cowering behind the men. So typical!" My friend and I put this together because this guy really pissed me off he thinks that the women did nothing while the men tried to break down the cockpit door to take control of the plane but I say was he there? How does he know the women did nothing they helped just as much as the men and what does it matter all these inoocent people died and this guys is saying women are cowards they were just as brave as the men.( a post from someone else)"Men should be men and act....women were not made to go attacking terrorists...its the job of the man to protect his woman". -I agree since men are always saying how "strong" they are. Time and time again, its the woman who is the strong one. At the hospital, when its time for a loved one to die, its the woman who seems to be able to stay while the men find reasons to be somewhere else. When a child is in pain, its the woman who is strong and comforts the baby while she's needed and then breaks down when she's alone. The woman endures pains of child birth, the stress of raising children and keeping a family together best she can and then, only if she does her job right, she must watch those children leave her and she must be strong enough to let them go. There's a play and a film about the lives of several women called Steel Magnolias and its a good title because that's what woman are... they are both delicate as flowers and strong as steel. Girls are a lot of things... coward isn't one of them - A very true and post made by hammerlix ( a post from a very stupid man)"You watch waaay too many stupid shows like Alias and Dark Angel. Women are weak, full stop. Just because there are a few tough ones out there doesn't mean the average woman has ANY chance of taking down an average man. She doesn't. And even those tough ones would get their asses kicked by a comparitively tough man" - you suck women are not weak. At least women have brains unlike some men who only thing having brawn is important. Also a women can take down a man one kick in balls and he'll be on the floor... so please shut up and I don't care if you flame me.
