Browser opens IP address but not the url

My IE6 doesn't open the page when the address is typed in but if I type in the IP address then it's fine. e.g. www.google.com gives the 'page cannot be displayed' error, but google opens if I enter 'http://216.239.39.99'.

I've tried other browers, they aren't working. In fact if I use 'ping www.google.com' at the cmd prompt it's says it couldn't connect, but 'ping 216.239.39.99 ' works fine.

(I'm using WinXP)

1. Obviously, make sure that the IP addresses that you're getting for your DNS servers are correct. To verify that, open a DOS window, type the following command at the DOS prompt, and then hit Enter:

ipconfig /all

2. Download and run the (free) WinsockXPFix program.

Please do not contact me by email or PM for help. We're all volunteers here, and only have so much free time to dedicate to our efforts.

However, if I've been working on a thread with you already, and seem to have "forgotten" your thread, please do send me a message. I try not to let things slip through the cracks, but it does happen sometimes.
