Help Help on random freezing and strange program behavior!

  #1
Jul 17th, 2005
All seemed to be in order, and just as suddenly as I went to bed and came back from work the next afternoon, my pc had frozen and now acts very strangely. I run AdAware and Spybot regularly, along with Ewido on occasion. I also use Norton Corporate virus protection. When I rebooted I first noticed the date was set back all the way to 2004, and programs were behaving strangely now, either freezing or causing a reboot. Ad-watch also claimed that the definition files were corrupted, and after repeated attempts to update definition files for all my spyware programs, they always appeared again, as if they were never downloaded. A few programs do work, but I tried to uninstall a few and either got a message claiming the program was not found(do you wish to remove from the add/remove?), or a simple error, file not found, etc.

I also fround it strange that freezes would occur before Windows even started loading, and also as it was loading. I even set my BIOS setting to fail safe defaults, but it doesn't seem to be the problem at all. You guys are my last hope, aside from dishing out a lot of money to take it in and get fixed. Here is the hjt log:

At first I thought this was a possible hardware problem, but my instinct tells me something is once again screwed in the registry files, which I know zilch about.

Sorry guys, I cleaned up my log a bit. I put HijackThis in a its own desktop folder, and removed 1 or 2 of the items referred to in the sticky threads.

When I rebooted I first noticed the date was set back all the way to 2004... strange that freezes would occur before Windows even started loading, and also as it was loading. I even set my BIOS setting to fail safe defaults,
Given all of that, I would be supicious of a failed CMOS battery or the like. If you've seen the freeze occur before Win even starts to load, that would be indicative of a problem whose cause lies at a lower level than Windows or relae software/drives.

Ok thanks. I'm assuming nothing looked suspicious in the log then. Well the CMOS battery is cheap, so one thing to knock out of the way. I'm just wondering what is causing the weird program behavior. How would a failed battery cause my computer to reboot when I open a program?

1. I don't see anything suspicious in the HJT log. However, HJT isn't meant to be used for diagnosing program crashes in general, so it's quite possible that you do have a legit problem somewhere.

Open the Event Viewer utility in your Administrative Tools control panel.

In the Event Viewer, look through the System and Application logs for entries flagged as "Warning" or "Error"; double-clicking on any of those entries will open a "details" window with more information about the error/warning. If you find any entries that seem to relate to the program hangs/crashes that you're having, post the full and exact contents given in the detail windows.

2. I only mentioned the battery mostly because of the time/date weirdness, but also because of the freezing even before Windows has started. The battery might not have anything to with those problems, but as you said- new ones are cheap, so it can't hurt to try the replacement.

This one in particular, began appearing at random right after I entered my user password at Windows startup:

Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.

Also:

Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. for C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\\UsrClass.dat

In fact, there are looong lists of events logged on the 15th on, the day problems started appearing. The system doesn't seem to be finding the files for certain programs and also lists it as incorrect enviornment?

As for the clock issue, I found something along those lines in the System section:

The time service has not been able to synchronize the system time for 49152 seconds because none of the time providers has been able to provide a usable time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized.

I don't know what to make of it all, maybe someone here might?
