I want to upgrade the RAM in one of my desktops. I can buy a 512 board for a good price but on running everest, I get the following DMI report:
Memory Controller Properties:
Error Detection Method None
Error Correction Single-bit
Supported Memory Interleave 4-Way
Current Memory Interleave 1-Way
Supported Memory Speeds 70ns, 60ns
Supported Memory Types SPM, FPM, EDO, Parity, ECC, SIMM, DIMM, SDRAM
Supported Memory Voltages 5V, 3.3V
Maximum Memory Module Size 256 MB
Memory Slots 6
I only have one 128 card installed and it divides it into 2 64 modules:
[ Memory Modules / BANK_0 ]
Memory Module Properties:
Socket Designation BANK_0
Type DIMM, SDRAM
Speed 70 ns
Installed Size 64 MB
Enabled Size 64 MB
[ Memory Modules / BANK_1 ]
Memory Module Properties:
Socket Designation BANK_1
Type DIMM, SDRAM
Speed 70 ns
Installed Size 64 MB
Enabled Size 64 MB
My question is: Since it´s saying the maximum memory module size is 256, can I use the 512 card and it will divy up into modules? It´s confusing me. If someone has a tutorial on this, I would appreciate it. Also, can I use the 512 card as long as it is on the supported memory types list as to compatibility? I´m assuming yes, but would appreciate a confirmation from one of you experts.
Thanks in advance,
zeroth

If the max that will be recognized in each socket is 256 MB, then that's all that will be recognized out of the 512MB. If the 512MB module is compatable with the other modules, yes you can use, but it will only show as 256MB.
