Plz help,
Some symptoms....1.) internet connection is slower now (connection speeds same as before (broadband)), 2.) AVG antivirus software occasionally pops-up w/ "AVG Resident shield VIRUS DETECTED while opening C:\Windows\system2:fsaa.dll Trojan horse Downloader.Generic.AEL (I cannot find this file) 3.)When I run Spyware Doctor always shows a Trojan.Spambot when I select to remove, Spyware Doctor always replies Trojan.Spambot requires a second scan in SafeMode to be removed (have done this several times - still there).

U said u have scanned in safe mode too, but did u disable system restore

First update ur Antivirus, go to safe mode disable System Restore and perform a complete scan of ur computer

Also scan with McAfee Avert Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

delete all the temporary files empty recycle bin and reboot ur computer

Ok- your log does show signs of at least two infections; please do the following:

Before we start to remove the infection, there is one thing you have to take care of first:

C:\Documents and Settings\Lindstrom\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 3 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe
The log entry above indicates that you are running HijackThis from within a Temp/Temporary folder. Please do the following:

Create a folder for HJT outside of any Temp/Temporary folders and move the HijackThis.exe file to that folder now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if HijackThis (and other data that you care about) is living in those Temp folders, it will be erased along with everything else!
Temp/Temporary folders are just that- Temporary. They are not meant for permanent storage, as their contents are often delete in the course of troubleshooting, by running disk clean-up utilities, etc.

Once you've done the above:

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Download and install these utilities (but do not run scans with them yet):

ewido Security Suite (trial version) - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

- Open ewido. In the main screen, click "Update" and click "Start Update". After the update process completes, exit from Ewido.

- Open MS Antispyware beta. Make sure the "AntiSpyware Autoupdater" feature is enabled, and that it has downloaded the most current antispyware updates. Close the program after you've verified this.

- Open AVG and make sure that you have the most current virus definitions installed. As with the above programs, don't run a scan with AVG; just close it once it is updated.


2. Download and install the CCleaner utility, but don't run it yet.


3. Run HijackTHis again, put a check mark next to the following entries, and then click the "Fix checked" button. Close HJT once it has finished performing the fixes:

4. Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up).


5. Run CCleaner. It may take a while for the program to perform its cleaning, so be patient. Close the program when it has finished.


6. Run AVG, ewido, and MS Antispyware beta consecutively; have the programs fix all malicious items they find.

When ewido finds the first malicious object on your system, it will ask you if it should clean it. When it asks this, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
Save the log file that ewido will create after it finishes scanning; you'll be including that log in your next post here.


7. Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Delete the following file if it still exists:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msctl32.dll

8. Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally.


9. Run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the log that ewido generated.

Did as DMR recommended. Puter seems to be running much better now. Spyware Doctor doesnt detect Trojan.Spambot anymore, but still get AVG popup re:fsaa.dll Trojan horse Downloader.Generic.AEL. I did not save the ewido log. But did attach recent HiJack This Log:

B) Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up).


* Run ewido and have it fix all malicious items it finds. Save the log file that ewido will create after it finishes scanning.


* Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Delete the following file if it still exists:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut32.exe

* - In Explorer, click on the "Search" button and enter the following criteria in the Search pane at the left-hand side of the Explorer window:

All or part of the file name: fsaa.dll
Look in: Local Hard Drives (C:)
Click More Advanced Options:
Type of File: (All files and folders)
Check/Select: Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, Search subfolders

Perform the search and tell us the results. If any versions of the fsaa.dll file are found, give us the exact location(s).

8. Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally.


9. Run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the log that ewido generated.

I missed this before, but twice now you've posted that the path to the fsaa.dll is:

Is that really correct, or is the path C:\Windows\system32?

You are correct. AVG references fsaa.dll as being at C:\Windows\system32.
However, this dll file is nowhere to be found on the computer.

1. OK- I'm just triple-checking here, but you cannot find the file even when you've configured Explorer to show all hiddne files and folders as described below, right?
2. Open the AVG Test Center and click on the Virus Vault button. If you see the offending in the vault, right-click on it and choose the "Delete File(s)" option.

Correct, I performed the search as requested for the fsaa.dll file. Nowhere to be found. The file reference does not appear in AVG Virus Vault (i.e. nothing to delete).
