xp won't boot past post screen

hope someone might help on this. Tried starting computer this morning but it won't go any farther after the post screen. I tried changing bootup from another hard drive but still same results. Everything worked fine when shutdown last night. I tried to boot up from from the cd but after loading setup files it just restarts all over again.
I am running xp pro with sp2 on AMD 3400 with 1 gig ram.

I took out the ram and reinstalled 1 set at a time and I was able to reboot ok. I guess 1 of the ram chips must be defective.
